Does Rising Cost of Gas Have You Looking for a Better Way to Work or School?
Online Tools Help Save Time & Money
PITTSBURGH, PA – Are you spending all of your free time searching for the best price on gas?  Southwestern PA residents looking for effective ways to keep more gas money in their pockets might be able to find some extra time as well.
The CommuteInfo Program reminds you that sharing the drive to work or school not only helps cut commute costs, but can mean a shorter ride to work or school by traveling in HOV lanes or in buses (on the bus lanes) during peak commuting hours – saving you time as well as money. Just go to www.CommuteInfo.org, complete a commuter profile and you will get a list of individuals who may be willing to carpool or vanpool. It’s fast, easy, and there is no cost to use these online tools.
Lisa Kay Schweyer of the CommuteInfo Program says she “would like to encourage more commuters to try the online tools to help find transit information, as well as vanpool, carpool & bikepool partners.” The number of requests to the program for information has been increasing. Â Many of the commuters contact the program initially because they are looking for ways to save money, but then find that the alternative commute is helping them save time as well.
CommuteInfo promotes regional commuter ridesharing initiatives by reaching out to area employers, transit providers, professional organizations, and current and potential ridesharers. The goal is for commuters living, working or attending school within the 10-county SPC region to choose ridesharing at least twice a week by providing them with viable options, incentives and encouragement.
With 5,425 new commuters enrolling over the past 5 years, CommuteInfo is well on the way to demonstrating how a strong and effective ridesharing program can benefit the region in many ways, such as:
CommuteInfo partners with other agencies to offer a wide range of services to employers and commuters within the region, including a toll free number for information and referrals, vanpool/carpool/bikepool rider matching, transit/biking/walking resources, park-n-ride facility information, and transportation resource fair lists. For more information about CommuteInfo and ridematching, please visit www.CommuteInfo.org or call toll free 1-888-819-6110.

May Is CommuteInfo Options Awareness Month
PITTSBURGH, PA — The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) wants all commuters and employers in southwestern PA to learn more about the commuting options available to them. To focus attention on available commuting alternatives, SPC has proclaimed May to be CommuteInfo Commute Options Awareness Month. SPC will be promoting the benefits of its CommuteInfo rideshare program during May. The goal of the CommuteInfo program is for commuters in southwestern Pennsylvania to choose ridesharing at least twice a week.
Gas prices are up over $1 per gallon since this time last year. The price of gas is now over $3.85 a gallon and commuters are looking for ways to save money. Alternatives to driving alone, like vanpooling, carpooling, using public transit or biking to work, are just a few of the ways to lower the cost of commuting. Over 500 commuters already ride to work daily in CommuteInfo's 43 registered vanpools and nearly 500 commuters ride to work daily in the 225 carpools registered with CommuteInfo.Â
Over 77% of the workers in the SPC region drive alone to work.  More of the region's commuters sharing a ride to work would help to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. In 2010, CommuteInfo's vanpool and carpool participants helped to keep nearly 800 cars off the road each workday. For a typical 30-mile round trip to work based on an average fuel economy of about 25 miles per gallon, each CommuteInfo vanpool and carpool participant saves over a gallon of gas per day. At current prices, that adds up to over $1,000 per year.Â
Visit www.commuteinfo.org and take advantage of the CommuteInfo Commute Cost Calculator to estimate how much you could be saving!
For more information about CommuteInfo and commuter alternatives, please visit www.commuteinfo.org, or call toll free 1-888-819-6110.
May also includes National Transportation Week, National Bike to Work Day, National Employee Health and Fitness Day, National Try Transit Week, and National Clean Air Week.
