    Commuter Choice Benefits

Ever hear of Commuter Choice?  As defined by the Federal Transit Administration:

What is the "Commuter Choice Program?"

It is a provision of the Internal Revenue Code [(26 USC 132(f)] that permits an employer to pay for an employee’s cost of commuting to work, in other than a single occupancy vehicle.

Why is there a Commuter Choice Program?

The program is designed to improve air quality, reduce traffic congestion, and conserve energy by encouraging employees to commute by means other than single occupancy motor vehicles.

If you would like to learn more about Commuter Choice, check out the information on CommuteInfo’s website:  http://www.commuteinfo.org/comm_why_choice.shtml.

Most employers today are faced with the spiraling costs of doing business, and probably can’t afford to reward valued employees with the kind of perks as they had in the past.  Perks like country club memberships, company cars, free healthcare benefits and generous retirement Work Perksplans are becoming a thing of the past.

But are they?  Very soon Port Authority will introduce Work Perks, a tax-savings program (eligible as a Commuter Choice benefit) that will allow employers to give employees more while costing employers less.  Read more about this by clicking here.

Some of the other transit operators in the region offer similar tax-savings programs employers can take advantage of for their employees, including the Beaver County Transit Authority and Westmoreland County Transit Authority.  Please contact them directly for more information.
