Commuters looking for alternatives to driving alone to work everyday are being given a sign. SPC’s CommuteInfo program has teamed up with PennDOT to install new informational signs throughout the region. Blue and white signs along heavily traveled roadways will encourage regional commuters to call for “Vanpool, carpool, transit info 1-888-819-6110” or visit www.CommuteInfo.org.

Each workday, over 400 people from around the region get together and vanpool to work. Vanpooling is one option for regional commuters looking for alternatives to driving alone. A vanpool is a group of 9 to 15 people who commute to and from work together but do not necessarily work in the same location (works best for commutes that are longer than 15 miles one way). There are currently 41 vanpool groups operating in the region.
Each vanpool group decides together on things such as seating arrangements and type of music to be played (if any). The vans are specially customized for the riders' comfort and seat either 9 or 15 passengers. One member of the group volunteers to be the van driver. The pick-up and drop-off locations are in conveniently located areas where the riders can meet to board the van and may even be within walking distance of their home.
People who choose vanpooling as their way to work can take advantage of the I-279 HOV lanes, as well as the extra time they would have spent driving--many people who ride vanpools use that time to sleep, read or catch up on paperwork. Some riders have also reported that their personal car insurance costs have decreased because they are no longer using their car to drive to work.
