CommuteInfo Vanpool Drivers Honored for their Service

The regional CommuteInfo volunteer vanpool drivers were awarded “Moving Mobility Individually” awards at the December 19th Association for Commuter Transportation Mid Atlantic Chapter’s Award Luncheon.

Award PresentationAn excerpt from the nomination:

The role of volunteer vanpool driver is not an easy one. In addition to having to navigate the regional roadways and peak drive time congestion, they serve as a leader for their vanpool group. The drivers do not receive any payment for their role. Many of them have been driving for years and years…getting their group to work every day and home at night. We appreciate what they contribute to the CommuteInfo program and their help in reducing congestion within the region.

The regions’ volunteer vanpool groups each travel an average distance of 43 miles one way to their work locations. Considering there are currently 428 participants in the program, if everyone of those commuters drove to work there would be an additional daily 391 vehicles further clogging the regions’ roadways and parking lots.

Sharing a ride via vanpooling also benefits the region by reducing the number of vehicle miles traveled annually in the region by 8,742,760, which also represents a $2,098,220 reduction annually in commuting costs. Additional benefits are realized in the reduction in carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and oxides of nitrogen being emitted into the regions’ air.

The event brought together leaders in the field of transportation planning, moderated by Jim LoKay, Traffic and Transportation Reporter for KDKA-TV and featured an address by the Pennsylvania Secretary of Transportation, Al Biehler.

In addition to the individual awards, several employers and even municipalities were recognized for their efforts to help support congestion alleviation related strategies.

The Association for Commuter Transportation supports its members in their efforts to enhance mobility, improve air quality and conserve energy through Transportation Demand Management (TDM) activities. ACT serves as an information resource, provides advocacy on transportation issues involving commute alternatives, and offers networking and professional development opportunities to its members. Did You Know?

How are new vanpools started?

There are 35 registered vanpool groups traveling throughout the region, but there are still commuters looking for one that works for their schedule. Or maybe the vanpool they might join doesn’t have any available seats. That is when the question is usually asked, “How can I start a new vanpool?”

Starting a new vanpool group can be as simple as 1-2-3.

1 – Ask your co-workers, neighbors or friends who have a similar commute if they are interested in vanpooling. Finding a group of 8 – 10 people who are interested and committed to vanpooling is an important first step.
2 – Call the CommuteInfo office (1-888-819-6110). We can help locate more people who might be interested in joining your group and can get you started with the paperwork.
3 – Decide who will drive, the pick-up and drop-off times, where the van will be parked. CommuteInfo will work with you to arrange for van delivery, driver training, etc. Then you can get started!
