Emergency Ride Home Service & Parking Discounts Approach One Year Anniversary
It has been almost one year since CommuteInfo’s regional Emergency Ride Home (ERH) service and parking discounts began. The ERH service was designed to provide a contingency option for registered commuters participating in a registered carpool or vanpool in the event of an unexpected personal or family emergency, personal illness, unscheduled overtime, or other eligible event. Currently over 900 commuters are eligible as members of a registered CommuteInfo vanpool or carpool for this service.
Through a special arrangement with ALCO parking, the CommuteInfo program was able to start a carpool/vanpool parking discount program available to registered CommuteInfo carpool and vanpool groups. The groups receive a 20% discount off the prevailing monthly lease rate at 3 designated parking facilities. To date 16 carpool and 3 vanpool groups are taking advantage of this offer.
At the end of this year, all registered carpoolers and vanpoolers will be contacted to verify their continued involvement in the CommuteInfo program and eligibility for the ERH service and/or parking discounts (if applicable). Any new participants interested in learning more about the ERH service, should check out the latest details on the Emergency Ride Home service by clicking here. The bride and groom met where? Sharing a ride to work on a vanpool?
This story begins over 20 years ago when as children, Heather and Mike attended the same church. But being different ages and attending different schools they never really knew each other. Then, just over 3 years ago, Heather started working in downtown Pittsburgh and decided to start riding a vanpool.
At that point, Mike had already been riding the van for 3 years and did not even recognize Heather her first day. Heather had remained active in the church and through that, got reacquainted with Mike’s family. Heather and Mike shared a seat on the van.
Over the years, as happens on most vans, the vanpool participants shared stories and got to learn much more about each other’s lives. In February of 2005, the group decided to go out to celebrate Mike's birthday and that is when Mike and Heather started dating. "We spend two hours a day commuting to and from downtown Pittsburgh. It's nice to be able to share that time together" Mike said.
Less than a year later, the couple was engaged and less than 2 weeks ago on October 14th, they got married. "I never expected to find my husband on the vanpool!" Heather said.

Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership to Launch Pilot Car-sharing Program
On November 16, 2006, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership’s Board of Directors voted to approve Flexcar, a Seattle-based car-sharing company, as the PDP’s partner in a Pittsburgh Pilot Car-sharing Program. The pilot program is planned to launch in spring 2007 for an 18 month period and serve the Downtown and Oakland areas.
Car-sharing is membership-based, shared-use of a fleet of vehicles. It is convenient – automated, self-service, immediate with no lines or paperwork. It is decentralized – many vehicles located across a city neighborhood. It is incremental – you pay as you go by the hour or by the day. It is predictable – rates include everything, with no surprises: gas, maintenance, full insurance, unlimited mileage, reserved parking space, 24x7 on-call and roadside assistance, detailed itemized invoices.
If you provide vehicles for your employees’ business use or reimburse employees for parking and vehicle transportation costs, this program may be just the thing for you. The PDP is looking for businesses to partner with as charter members in this exciting new program. Call Lucinda Beattie at the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (412-325-0158) for more information.
