Did You Know?
What is a TMA???
Do you know that there are groups that assists in transportation issues for employers and employees? Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) were formed in the 1970s in response to the gasoline shortages. TMAs are grassroots organizations that work within their communities to achieve the mission of improving air quality and mitigating traffic congestion. TMAs are non-profit organizations, usually membership based, that serve businesses by helping with their transportation issues and assist employees by providing commuting options. Currently there are over 150 TMAs in major cities throughout the United States.
There are many benefits in becoming a TMA member. TMAs offer information and assistance with alternative transportation options such as public transit, carpooling, vanpooling, bicycling and walking to their members as well as acting as a link between the private sector and the public sector on transportation planning and funding issues that affect the area the TMA serves. TMAs can work with agencies to solve transportation issues or conduct planning studies. Some TMAs serve a specific community such as a university, hospital complex or business park. Funding for TMAs can come from many public and private sector sources--federal, state or local transportation resources, foundation funds, or development fees.
